New Year - New Resolutions
What is your business resolution for 2010? Just about anywhere you go -- whether it's the Internet, newspapers, magazines, your next door neighbor -- you'll hear that 2009 was not a good year for most businesses and the economy certainly needed a boost.
Well, it's a new year and many economists are predicting a year of economic growth for 2010. Let's hope that is true. But in the meantime, it's up to you to jump start your business and perhaps make some changes. Here's my list of recommendations from a graphic and web designer's point of view: If you have a website, review it. Read every page. - Do you have any typos? These should be fixed immediately.
- Do you know how much traffic is going to your site? If not, you should be reviewing this monthly. If your traffic is low, why? Are you promoting your website in every marketing piece you create? Is it on your business cards?
- Have you asked your clients whether they go to your website? If they don’t, what would make them visit it or recommend it to others?
- Do you have keywords and descriptions in your coding? This allows search engines to find you based on the type of work you do.
- When was the last time your site was updated? I don’t mean a new site. Just new copy or pictures or listing things that have changed in your business.
If you don’t have a website, why?
- Perhaps this is the year to get a presence on the Internet. More and more people go to the Internet to find out about a company or even just to find an address and phone number. If you’re not there, your competitors will be. Don’t let them have an advantage over you.
Printed Materials
- Is your business card dating back to 1980? It may be time for a redesign.
- Do your letterhead, envelopes and business cards match? Are you using brochures with an old logo or writing in your cell phone number?
- Have the forms in your office been photocopied 5 million times and you can’t find the original? Get them retyped.
- Remember, you want your clients to think of you as a professional company and you want your marketing materials to reflect that.
So that’s my suggestions for 2010. It’s time to get started and complete some of them. Here’s to a successful and profitable 2010.
Is Windows 7 worth the hype? I've just switched my operating system from Vista to Windows 7. While I was not unhappy with Vista, I do find that my machine does not become "unresponsive" as often as it did with Vista. There are a few new features that I like such as comparing two windows side-by-side and the speed of opening up programs. My favorite addition is the ability to scroll your mouse over a taskbar icon and get a view of what is open, then open up the file to full screen.
There are different versions of the software—Starter, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. The Microsoft site has a Windows 7 comparison that I would recommend looking at. The average home user should go with Home Premium and the small business user would be wise to select the Professionalversion. But be sure to compare and choose the best system for you. The nice feature of Professional is that you can run many Windows XP programs in Windows XP Mode that do not run in either Vista or Windows 7.
I don't know how easy it is to upgrade as I got a new computer. But my overall recommendation is, unless you are having a lot of trouble with XP or Vista I would wait until you purchase a new machine. I'm sure there are others out there that feel you should upgrade immediately but my way of thinking (and my pocketbook's way) is "if it works, don't fix it."
Free Programs
Are they Good or Bad?
If you're like me, you like to find free, but useful, programs that help organize you and your business and make some of your tasks easier to do. There are many free programs on the Internet. Some, of course, are great while others can wreak havoc with your computer. Before you venture to download any programs, I would highly recommend installing an anti-virus and spyware removal software. (On second thought you should have those anyway even if you don't download free programs.) What programs do I like? Here's my list:
- Ad-aware - This free version for personal home use gives you malware or spyware protection. If you want added protection there are other choices for this software from plus, pro and business.
- Ninite.com – This website offers many free software programs that you can download all at once. This was great when I switched to a new computer as I could get many applications installed all at once. (Be sure to look at some of the fine print. Microsoft Office is listed but it is a trial version.) But if you are looking for a quick way to install many free programs you already use, this is the way to go. Note that this is for home use and there is a Pro version of Ninite for businesses.
- Picasa – I love this program for all my pictures. (Last year I took over 3,000 pictures and it saved me a lot of time.) The program is a free photo editing software. You can have the files on your computer and also upload them to your own Picasa site for friends to look at. Picasa automatically locates all the photos on your computer and you can even tag each photo and search for specific people, places, etc.
- Google Products – Other than the Google search engine that we are all familiar with, Google offers many free products that are useful. First and foremost, if you need another email address you can sign up for g-mail. You can create online documents, presentations and spreadsheets that can be share easily with others using Google Docs. Check out Google and see what you can use.
There are many more great free programs out there, but if you haven't tried any of these before try them this year! And while you're at it, here's a list of some of my favorite Internet sites to visit.

PICTURE-A-DAY
If you've been following my newsletters, you may recall I made a goal for 2009 to take a picture-a-day. I am happy to say I completed this task. By November and December it sure was difficult coming up with a picture. But overall when I looked back at the pictures, I found there were some nice ones I could boast about for the year. In fact I created a calendar from my favorites. I hope you agree. The 2010 calendar is available as a free download for both 8.5x11 or 11x17 formats. Keep in mind the pdf files are large so may take a few minutes to download. Feel free to check out the other pictures from 2009 and let me know if you found one you like better than what I chose. Click here to view the pictures or download the calendar.
So am I committing to doing this another year? Absolutely not! While I found it challenging, I think it's time to move on to something different. For 2010, I will be taking pictures with a theme. So each month there may be one picture or 50 pictures depending on what I find that relate to that theme. My theme for the next three months are: January: Motivational; February: Environment and March: Shadows. Stay tuned to see what I can come up with. If anyone would like to send me their pictures based on these themes, I would love to post them and give you credit for the picture. (I promise not to pass them off as my own.)
ORGANIZING TIPS
Organizing Your Tax Files
Do you walk into your accountant's office each year with a shoebox filled with receipts? Are you afraid you're going to be shown to the door when you do? If you procrastinate every year about getting your taxes together, perhaps it's time for a better system. If you don't already use an accounting program like Quickbooks or Quicken now is the time to start. In fact Quickbooks even has a free Quickbooks Online service you can sign up for. By entering in your data each month (or as you pay bills), it will save you time at the end of the year. Be sure to identify any item that is a business deduction if you combine both home and business in one account. You can even keep track of your business mileage. Another great tip is to ask your tax preparer what the best recordkeeping system is and how can you adopt it. You'll both be less stressed when tax season rolls around again and he/she may even be happy to see you! Ask a Question or Share your Favorite Tip
We all have our own favorite computer tips, shortcuts or "how to's". We also have those frustrating times when you just can't figure something out. Please share them with me via email and I will choose one to put in an upcoming newsletter.
